A peek from the Town Crier’s December 13, 1983 issue – Santa and his talking tree are pictured chatting with some of the residents who came out on Friday night, December 4 to help celebrate the Chamber of Commerce’s first “Hanging of the Green”. The evening was overwhelmingly accepted and the Chamber is eagerly looking forward to an even bigger and better celebration next year!    – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier’s November 15, 2006 issue – It’s a bit rare to have an Easter lily and Christmas cactus blooming in the Fall at the same time, but Linda Lantz has just that incident occurring in her Neustadt home. She planted the lily outside after Easter hoping it would bloom again for Easter 2007. While cleaning up her flowerbeds this Fall she discovered that the lily had grown and was ready to bloom. With the conditions outside being less than ideal, she dug the plant up last week and brought it into her house to make sure it was warm enough for the blooms to open. She now has both the Easter and Christmas flowers blooming at the same time!

A peek from the Town Crier’s November 6, 1996 issue – It was a get your hands mucky and dig out those seeds kind of evening!  The Optimist Club of Mildmay-Carrick sold guesses on the number of seeds in a 707 lb. pumpkin which was on display at the Bank of Montreal, Mildmay. (The pumpkin was grown by Paul & Doreen Klages and their girls.)  In the top photo, Optimist President Matt Ruetz digs deep into the pumpkin to retrieve some of the seeds. John Cummings and MaryAnne Burgess both guessed the correct number of seeds – 828! They split the $100.00 first prize.  The second prize of $75.00 went to Janet Ruetz with her guess of 830. The $50.00 third prize was won by Lori Ruetz for her guess of 820.  It’s interesting to note that the highest guess was 967,430 and the lowest was 23.  Proceeds from the sales went towards playground equipment for the Mildmay schools.    – Town Crier photo

The two-day fundraiser was a great success, realizing $4,500.00!  One of the events was a Donkey Baseball game as pictured above. The Mildmay Lions played against the Mildmay Rotary Club.    – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier files – Wednesday, October 18, 2006 – Friday the 13th is generally associated with bad luck…. and the weather on Friday, October 13th, 2006 was certainly “bad” at times. It didn’t take long for snow to accumulate in the area as shown in this photo of the Teeswater Branch of the Bruce County Public Library! The photo was submitted by A. Joanne Osborne.

A peek from the Town Crier files – Wednesday, September 25, 1996 – A new fundraiser was cooking at Mildmay’s Sacred Heart School… a cookbook produced by the Advisory Council!   Some of the  Cookbook Committee members Karen Ruetz, Chris Yahbee, Karen Huber and Connie Bohnert were camera shy so their daughters were happy to fill in for the photo!  Checking out the books are (back l-r) Sarah Ruetz, Paula Yahbee and (front l-r) April Huber and Jessica Bohnert.         – Town Crier photo

Pictured, on the right, is the Royal Hotel, located at the corner of Elora Street (Hwy #9) and Absalom Street in Mildmay.  Schuett’s Furniture moved into this building in 1920 and is still there today celebrating its 110th anniversary.
