Peek at the Past

A peek from the Town Crier’s Wednesday, March 17, 2010 issue – If you want to get a job done, call in the experts! Terry and Hilda Borth were just using their old barn for equipment storage. It was also deteriorating quickly and they needed a place to build a new residence. Between 50 and 60 Mennonites converged at the site last Thursday morning, March 11, 2010 and within four hours the older 60’x50’ section and newer 35’x50’ section were demolished and being taken away. (Compare that to doing the job on your own?)         – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier’s Friday, February 20, 1970 issue – Close to 200 attended the Mildmay Town League Ball Banquet at the Arena. Carrick Pensioners captured both the Mildmay Rotary Trophy (League Championship) and the Formosa Brewery Trophy (ending regular season in first place) while the finalist entry was the Formosa Mustang club, winners of the Station Hotel Trophy. The thrill for those two teams came at the close of the playoffs… but four players got their thrill when their names were called out to receive individual awards. A vote by the coaches showed this tie.

A peek from the Town Crier’s Friday, February 20, 1970 issue – Now that’s what we call a real “PLUG”! Fire insurance rates would surely decrease at the Walkerton District Secondary School if this building-high fire plug were real. . . however, we would imagine that Fire Chief Irwin Lobsinger and his crew of firemen might also have a bit of difficulty finding a hose big enough to fit. . . he just wouldn’t have the right connections! Grade 13A must have had the right connections for they placed first in snow sculpturing this beauty. As for the dog in this photo, he too is made of snow, and with such a sizeable “plug”, he’s got problems as well. . . – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier’s Wednesday, January 20, 2010 issue – Joe Rys of Walkerton only learned a couple of hours before the “Torch Run” in Walkerton on Monday, December 28, 2009 that he could join the run because of a cancellation. He became “Runner 113” and has been spreading the excitement of Canada’s Olympics to area schools and service clubs and other groups almost daily including Mildmay Sacred Heart School. A peek from the Town Crier’s Friday, January 23, 1970 – Mr. Vic Waring (left) talks briefly with three of the female members of the Mildmay-Carrick Hill & Dale Riders just prior to their leaving on a two hour 25 mile “safari”. Mr. Waring had just completed his “SOC” (snowmobile operators course) talk with members… the first of many to be made by him within the next few months in Ontario. – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier’s Tuesday, January 9, 1990 issue – D-K Construction Limited of Kitchener has started making interior and exterior renovations to the Mildmay Branch of the Bank of Montreal. When the job is finally completed, the two buildings shown above will be made into one with the new entranceway to be placed at the right. Plans are to have the job completed by the end of March 1990. – Town Crier photo

A peek from the Town Crier’s Tuesday, December 19, 1989 issue – The heading for this photo read “Get Those Butts Up Out’ta The Snow!” The cutlines read: “Come on you guys, the water’s great… you aren’t trying to duck out of your duty of having your early morning bath, are you?” says the two Rotary Club swans “The Captain” and “The Lady”. While the circle of open water had closed down somewhat overnight because of the extreme cold nights the week before, there was still ample space for everyone (so The Captain felt). Actually there was a brief moment or two when the Crier photographer felt that The Captain was beckoning for him to join in the fun, but a second look at our feet convinced him otherwise. – Town Crier photo
