A peek from the Town Crier in 2002 and 2012 – The hometown team won the Championship title at both the 43rd and 53rd Annual Mildmay Atom Hockey Tournaments held in 2002 and 2012.  Pictured above is the team from 2002. A peek from the Town Crier’s Thursday, March 25, 1982 issue – Millie Schurter recently celebrated her 100th Birthday. Pictured is Miss Schurter beside one of the early telephone switchboards at her Mildmay store.  The first switchboard had five subscribers, namely  the Bank, Urban Schmidt (butcher), Dr. Huck (veterinarian), Dr. Wilson (medical doctor) and Conrad Liesemer (hardware store), and the list continued to grow. Miss Schurter continued manning the Mildmay switchboard until 2:00 am, September 21, 1958 when South Bruce Municipal Telephone Company switched everything to dial

A peek from the Town Crier’s Wednesday, March 13, 2002 issue – Pictured are the members of the girls and boys senior volleyball teams from Mildmay’s Sacred Heart School. They were the Champions of the Board Tournament which was held at Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton. This title had not been awarded to Sacred Heart since 1979! A peek from the Town Crier’s Friday, February 18, 1972 issue – Mrs. Patricia Cross, R.N. watches the control panel and tape of a patient’s heartbeat. The equipment is only part of the complex new Intensive Care Unit at the County of Bruce General Hospital in Walkerton. These very old photos were brought into the Town Crier office by one of our subscribers.  The top one is a photo of Horseshoe Falls.   Also referred to as the Canadian Falls, it is the largest of the three falls that form Niagara Falls.  The second photo shows the American Falls and the ice mountains.  It’s interesting to see all the people walking under that frozen falls.   We welcome submissions for the “Peek at the Past” feature.  You can drop them off at our office or email them to thecrier@wightman.ca.  We’d love to share them with everyone!

A peek from the Town Crier’s January 16, 2002 issue – Mildmay’s Juvenile Hockey Club claimed one of the top jewels in minor hockey for the second consecutive year. . . they captured the Juvenile “C” Silver Stick Championship after a perfect weekend in Mooretown, Ontario. This same club won the All-Ontario Juvenile crown last season.
