October 2015

– The most beloved musical in Canadian history is coming to Cambridge.  Audiences are in for a real treat as a cast of 24 professional performers and 3 local children prepare to hit the stage at the Dunfield Theatre Cambridge for the theatres grand scale production of Anne of Green Gables running October 1th through November 8th.

-The Municipality of South Bruce is offering a Seniors Computer Program and they have had an overwhelming support from the seniors.  Cherie Leslie, manager of Facilities and Recreation, said that the intent of the program is to bring seniors together and provide a hands on computer learning experience.

October 2005

-The Belmore Homecoming Committee held their final meeting.  A profit of approximately $66,000 was realized, which would make a great contribution to the work that needed to be done to the roof of the Belmore Community Centre in the Spring of 2006.

-The new school year brought a few changed to Mildmay’s two elementary schools.  Stephanie Alexander was the new Jr. Primary Science, Art and French teacher and Betty Bell a new Educational Assistant at Mildmay Carrick Public School.  Marion Massaloup who had been a teacher at Sacred Heart School for several years assumed the position of School Principal with Greg McLean named as the new Grade 8 teacher.

October 1995

-”Chief Mark Omi” a four year old cow, and one of the herd on “Elandee Holstein Farm” owned by Leslie and Dorothy Weber and Bevan and Heather Weber, had won many awards at Fall Fair and shows.  He was the “Grand Champion Cow” at the Western Ontario Championship in Stratford the first Bruce County cow to win in this Class sine 1953.

-The Mildmay and District Chamber of Commerce held their annual “Lamplighter Lottery” Dinner and  Dance.  Winner of the grand prize of $500.00 were Mary and Len Fischer.  Pete Liesemer won the $300.00 prize and Bob Markle was the winner of $200.

October 1985

-The first meals were delivered by Marion Agla and Sheldon Wolfe for Clifford’s “Meals on Wheels” program.  People who were unable to prepare meals or had inadequate cooking facilities or had health or social needs qualified for the program.

-”Miss Mildmay Carrick Fall Fair” for 1985, Mary Jane Schefter, was chosen as 1st runner up and “Miss Congeniality” at the “Miss Mid Western Ontario Pageant” held in Lucknow, Ingrid Ratz of RR1 Neustadt who was Hanover’s “Queen of the Fair” was named as the winner of the contest.

October 1975

-Hospital Board Chairman Ted Cobean and Hospital Staff Representative Gerry Vanleeuwen jointly turned the sod to mark the beginning of construction of the new County of Bruce General Hospital addition. The work is expected to take approximately 50 weeks and will cost $1, 362, 971.00

-A group of teenage girls, headed up by Christine Schuett, completed a successful canvass for the Canadian Arthritis Society raising a total of $233.55.  Following the canvass, the girls enjoyed dinner provided by Mrs. Godfrey Schuett.

September 2015

– Here is some news that the children at your house will find exciting!  The Optimist Club of Mildmay Carrick is sponsoring a couple of inflatable activities this weekend!  One is a 40’ obstacle course and the other one is a bouncy house meant for the younger kids.

-Mildmay Shell recently won a major Customer Service Award from Shell Canada.  The store was one of only a handful from across the country to be recognized  for Exceptional Front line Customer Service.  Mildmay was one of the smallest communities to win the award.

September 2005

-The Mildmay Carrick Optimist Received a “Trillium Grant” towards the overall cost of installing new playground equipment at the Mildmay Carnegie Park (the old ball park location off Absalom Street, East)

-Good news for the local Doctor Recruitment Committee when they learned that they were being classified as being “under serviced” which made it easier for the to attract doctors.

September 1995

-The new ice rates for the Mildmay Carrick Recreation Complex effective January 1, 1996 were set.  Some of the prices per hour included: Curlng $68.00, Sr Broomball $54.00, Minor Hockey $44.00 and Peak Hours to Out of Towners $63.00

-The Township of Carrick had just added a new “Champion” grader and truck to their fleet of equipment.  They added a grader truck and loader the previous year, so were in good shape as upcoming reductions in grants from the government were forthcoming.

September 1985

-The narrow bridge near Lot 24, Concession 8 -9 of Carrick Township located at the bottom of a steep hill had been removed and work was beginning on a new wider, modern replacement.  The new structure would also change the approaches and the actual creek bed.  Traffic for the winter would be reroute around the nearby side roads. The project had been divided into a three phase program that would continue over a three year period.

-Miss Cheryl Horni from Owen Sound was named as the Interim Manager of the Mildmay Branch of the Bank of Montreal. She replaced Mr Stephen Fay who was transferred to Walkerton.

September 1975

-New staff members at Mildmay Carrick Public School included Mrs Eileen Phillips (gr 4) and French teacher Mr. Leonardo Aquilino. Nine new staff members started at Sacred Heart, Mildmay including Miss Patricia Bethune (grade 8) Mr.  William McLelland (grade 7/8), Mr. Robert Kirkland (grade 4/5) Mrs. Jane Krupica (grade 4), sister Joyce Kempel (grade 2), Mrs Una Szymikoska (grade 1), Mt. Paul Strasboug (oral French), Mrs. Florence Lambertus (teacher’s aide) and Mr. Robert Flock (acting principal)

-The Municipal Clerk for the Village of Mildmay had moved into the new quarters at the Mildmay Carrick Community Centre. The office was moved from the main street location (now the drugstore) to a room in the firehall.

August 2015

– Rotarian Randy Ruetz and a wonderful crew of volunteers positioned themselves on the yellow line of Highway #9 in the heart of downtown Clifford for a Rotary Road Toll on Friday August 7th and Saturday August 8th.

-The South Bruce Tourism Committee began its August meeting with a very interesting tour of Voisin’s Rabbit Farm near Formosa.

August 1995

-Members of the Mildmay Carrick Firefighters are working on various fundraisers to obtain funds towards a new rescue truck … and one of those methods is an auction sale of articles which have been donated to the firefighters.

-You’re invited to the Arthur and Area Homecoming ‘95 August 4-7 weekend.  The Village of Arthur will host the Sunflower Festival, as family and friends from coast to coast, the NWT, Japan, Europe, Israel and the US are coming home to their Global Village.

August 1985

-Mildmay Carrick Minor Hockey Registration – Juvenile $45, Midget $45, Bantam $40, PeeWee $35, Atom $30, Novice and Tyke $25.

-Sometime during the night, Clifford Community Hall was entered by some person or persons.  The discovery was made July 28 by Mrs. Gertrude Huehn.  Nothing was stolen but damage sustained to the bar, the door leading upstairs, and the cupboards in the small room.  There is no estimate of damages available at this time.

August 1975

-Work on the new $1,362,971.00 addition to the County of Bruce General Hospital at Walkerton is now officially underwar.

-A CBC Television crew were in the Village of Clifford last Friday filming at the Wightman Telephone Company Limited for a two week production of the CBC Show “Away Out”.  Lori Jennings is the host MC for that show which is shown across Canada on almost all of the CBC stations.

A peek from the Town Crier files – July 12, 1994 – The Mildmay Midget Girls Ball Team captured the gold medal at a Walkerton Tournament. They defeated Walkerton 21-3, Clinton 17-6 and in the finals edged Arthur 15-14. Front (l-r): Kari Detzler, Jennifer Kraemer, Jennifer Boomer and Erin Kueneman.
