Hanging of the Green next Friday!
The Magic of Christmas is coming to Mildmay next Friday evening, November 28th, with the arrival of the Hanging of the Green! The 2014 theme is “The Magic of Christmas” and you, along with your family and friends are sure to experience the magic when you attend this popular event.
This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Hanging of the Green. The event is sponsored by the Mildmay & District Chamber of Commerce and is supported by local service clubs, organizations and the Mildmay Business Association. Everyone joins together to bring this special night to the community.
The evening gets underway at 5 p.m. in downtown Mildmay. Santa Claus will be arriving early to meet the children prior to the parade. He will be at JSW Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration located on Absalom Street from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for all the kids to get a chance to say “hi” to Santa.
After stopping by to see Santa, the children are welcome to drop off their letters at the special mailbox by the Post Office, and while there, why not stop to enjoy the Mildmay-Carrick Public School Choir who will be performing from 7:00 – 7:30 pm.
One of the popular attractions each year at the Hanging of the Green is the delicious hot apple cider. Be sure to get a cup to sip as you walk along the street. It’s a great way to warm up! You can also warm up by one of the fire pits located beside Mac’s Convenience Store.
If you are feeling hungry, the Mildmay Rotary Club will be selling their famous sausage on a bun. Sacred Heart High School students will be selling hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies with proceeds going towards their Battlefields Tour To France. If you are craving something sweet, you can purchase a World’s Finest Chocolate Bar from the Grade 7 & 8 students from Mildmay-Carrick Public School. The proceeds from these sales will go towards their trip to Ottawa.
The “Sharing of the Green” 50-50 tickets will be on sale at the Hanging of the Green. Be sure to get some tickets — last year’s winner won $2,008.00! The draw is being held on Sunday, November 30th at the Optimist Club’s Breakfast With Santa. The breakfast will take place at the Mildmay-Carrick Recreation Complex from 8:30 – 11:30 am. Everyone is invited to come to the breakfast – all ages are welcome!
The highlight of Friday night’s events is always the Lighted Santa Claus Parade. It begins at 7:45 pmwith entries gathering at Connect Equipment located across from the Mildmay Rotary Park. The parade will travel up the main street and end at the Mildmay-Carrick Recreation Complex. (Please take note that Highway #9 will be closed from 7:30 – 8:30 pm for the parade.) There is still tons of time left to get your parade entry ready! Keep in mind the theme and have your float/entry at Connect Equipment by7:15 pm.
Back by popular demand is the “Memories of Christmas” performance at St. Paul’s United Church. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy some memories and singing by a group of local musicians – Doug Breig, Brian Durrer, Greg Schuett and Carolyn Borth. This performance is guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit and is a wonderful way to wrap up the evening. The church is located one block off the main street on the corner of First and Peter Streets.
Chair of the Hanging of the Green, Sherry Durrer and her committee of volunteers have been very busy preparing for this incredible night of festivities. They extend a warm invitation to come to Mildmay and experience the Magic of Christmas!
