This year Sacred Heart High School’s Crusader Productions are taking their audience back to the year 1959, to Clinton, Ontario when 14 year old Steven Truscott was wrongly accused and hence convicted in the rape and murder of 12 year old Lynne Harper.  “Innocence Lost: A Play About Steven Truscott” was written by Beverly Cooper. Presenting a play about an actual event  is a different approach for the school, but promises to be a very thought provoking production.  Drama teacher, Veronica Davidson, said that the event not only “rocked Clinton, but the entire nation”.  The play shows how children were taken from a carefree summer day to the tragedy of a horrendous crime and how it changed them.  The student actors visited the actual locations that are depicted in the play to get a true sense of how their characters may have felt.  Dyllan Mooser who plays Steven, said it was intimidating to be in the courthouse and felt a sense of coldness and despair when sitting in the cell at the jail.  “I felt like I was walking in his (Steven’s) footsteps, and understood how unfortunate it all was,” he added. The students also visited the woods where Lynne’s body was found and held a special prayer service there.    The play is being presented in the gym at Sacred Heart School in Walkerton from Wednesday, May 20th to Saturday, May 23rd.  Tickets are  $15.00 for Adults and $10.00 for Students and Seniors. Tickets  are available at  SHHS’s Main Office and Marlin Travel in Walkerton and can also be purchased at the door. Seating is limited and numbered, therefore it is recommended you purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment. For more information, please call the school at 519-881-1900.

Saturday, April 11th was “Seedy Saturday” at the Mildmay-Carrick Public Library!  People were encouraged to take their unwanted and extra seeds to the seed swap.  The special guest for the day was Devan Penny (centre) from Fair Fields Community Shared Agriculture, Neustadt.  He was in attendance to share information about his farm and answer any questions.  Librarian Pat Markle (left) and Library Clerk Brigitte Wolf (right) are also pictured. There were two draws made, and the winners were Joel Wolf- Edwards who won a shovel and peat pellet and Trisha Voisin who won a package of S-hooks and a garden stake.      – Town Crier photo

The Optimist Club of Mildmay-Carrick held its 20th “Annual Duck Race” on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015.   Conditions were favourable on Otter Creek as the 500 ducks wended their way through Mildmay’s Rotary Park. Teresa Huber’s “lucky duck” crossed the finish line first and earned her the big prize of $250.00. Winners of $100.00 each were the ducks that came in 100th, 200th, 300th, 400th and 500th. Claiming these prizes were Tom Smith, Lily Huber, Betty Siegner, Chris Speers and Todd & Jen Fortney & Family.  (Sometimes it pays to finish last!) And there were 15 lucky winners of $50.00 each for every “25th” duck (ie. 25th, 50th, 75th, etc.).   Happy recipients of these prizes included Verlaine Stark, Dylan Stuy, Nash King, Mark Kraemer, Gerry Bross, Ross & Nora Howe, Allison Bross, Kevin Gutscher, Chris Grahl, Caleb Grubb, Chip & Susan Bross, Irene Kain, Lauren Grubb, Scott & Carrie Girdler and  Morley & Lorraine Fischer. Congratulations to all of the lucky winners, and to the Optimists for staging another successful  “race”!

The Formosa Lioness Club held an Easter Egg Hunt at the Formosa Community Centre on Saturday morning, April 4th, 2105.  There was a great attendance for the event, with lots of children enjoying gathering Easter eggs.

Left to right:  Jason Barlow of Teeswater, Bruce Reinhart  and Kevin Klein, both of Mildmay, enjoyed their weekend as a part of the pioneer encampment at the Old-Tyme Maple Syrup Festival on March 28th & 29th at Saugeen Bluffs Conservation Area outside of Paisley.   The event is organized each year by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Foundation and features a wide variety of demonstrations and activities. Visitors could get their fill of maple treats and of course pancakes and syrup!  Kevin mentioned that he had brought along a copy of the Town Crier which provided the perfect opportunity for this photo.  That paper sure gets out and about!   – Town Crier photo

Mildmay students participate in speaking program
The Mildmay & District Lions Club held their annual Effective Speaking Program on Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 during their regular meeting at the Vintage Cafe. Students from Sacred Heart School and Mildmay-Carrick Public School in Grades 6-8 took part in the event. The speeches were well done and enjoyed by the Lions members and students’ families. The four students who presented their speeches then moved on to the District A-9 finals which were held in Neustadt on Saturday, March 21st. The students were presented with certificates of appreciation and thanked by President John Allensen and Lion Dave Fortney. Pictured with Lion Dave Fortney, who organized the evening, are (left to right) Michaela Durrer (who spoke on the subject of roller coasters), Stephanie Hill (her topic was cancer), Rebekah Stuckless (she talked about why you shouldn’t wear make-up) and Vivian Weiland (who spoke about trolls).   – Town Crier photo
