A peek from the Town Crier files – Friday, May 21, 1965 –  Two Grade 12 students from Walkerton Separate High School Rosemary Fedy (left) and Joanne Houghton (right) of Mildmay chose The Crier as an essay project dealing with a “local industry”. In the above photo the girls try their hand setting “cold type” on one of the new machines at the Crier paper.

A peek from the Town Crier files – May 7, 1965 –  This is the Mildmay Monarchs hockey team who gave local and district fans one of the best winters of hockey excitement for some time. Holders of the group title, they also were W.O.A.A. Int. “C” finalists. Front: Peter Liesemer, mascot. First row (l-r):  Harvey “Jiggs’ Liesemer (coach), Bob Fortney, Merv Helwig, Ron Dietz, Gary Johnston, Bob Niesen and Don Leach (transportation. 2nd row: Don Missere (asst. treasurer), Bob Becker (secretary-treasurer), Dave Gutscher, Sandy Fedy, Mike Weber, Reuben Schefter (treasurer), Billy Dosman (stick boy). Back row: Harry Dosman, Dave Wendt, Chuck Niesen, Bob Armstrong, Dave Niesen and Bill Niesen. Missing from the photo were Bob Weiler, Ross Harrison, Don Beckner and John Hafermehl (publicity).

A peek from the Town Crier files – April 16, 1971 – The Mildmay Arena Commission held a Skate-A-Thon with some 123 skaters taking part. Organizer of the event, Arthur Albert (right) is pictured presenting trophies to the various winners. Left to right: Dave Dietz, 24, was the oldest skater with the most number of hours, who skated 21 hours;  Anna Lou Fischer was the girl who skated the longest, and she also skated 21 hours; 19-year-old Mike Goetz was the only person to skate the entire 24 hours and he raised the most money;  Brian Durrer, age 10, was the youngest skater with the most number of hours, that being 16.  A grand total of $1,900 was raised.

A peek from the Town Crier files – APRIL 23, 1965 – Four members of the Mildmay Separate School Board (Herb Weber, Thomas Detzler, John Arnold and James Goetz) inspect one of the finished classrooms in the new addition at the Mildmay Separate School.  Four classrooms were constructed but only two were going to be put to use at the time. A combined staff and board room, storage room and Principal’s office were also incorporated into the new section.

A peek from the Town Crier files – Friday, May 9th, 1975 – Renovation construction at the Mildmay-Carrick Community Centre was moving right along. Block layers were up to the hall level when this photo was taken.  The next step was to remove the old front section.

A peek from the Town Crier files – March 30, 2005 – A huge crowd showed up at the 14th annual Optimist Club Easter Egg Hunt at the Mildmay Rotary Park on Easter Sunday… although there was still snow on the ground, the sun helped to brighten the day. Children, ages 12 and under, were invited to participate in the egg hunt with everyone receiving a chocolate treat. There were also numerous special draws for the children.

A peek from the Town Crier files – Friday, August 8, 1969 – Members of the Mildmay-Carrick Fire Department prepare to extinguish the remaining blaze inside the roof of the Sacred Heart Church’s sacristy. The fire was discovered by a member of the C.W.L. during a funeral dinner which was being served in the basement at the time of the outbreak. The fire caused $35,000 in damage.
